Discussion:
BG2: What to keep, what to drop, what to sell?

Hi:

I've recently started Chapter 3, and even with a scroll case, gem bag and
bag of holding I seem to be maxing out inventory very quickly.,

I'm wondering what to keep:
- Keys - should I drop them once used?
- Notes & books - I learned in NWN to 'drop when done' on these.
- Gems - there are some very valuable (1800 or so) things like King's tear,
etc. What do I keep? I assume I need the Pommel stone, as it reacts
differently, but ...
- old plot items - I have the symbol of Amauntor and Sun Gem, do I need
those - they don't seem sellable.

And finally, weapons. How much should I hold?

Thanks,

Mike

You haven't got a bag of holding unless you are cheating (or in
chapter 4 instead of 3). The only bags of holding in the game are in
Chapter 4 and, if you have Throne of Bhaal, Chapter 8.

- Keys - should I drop them once used?
Probably. If the door remains open, you can get rid of the key.

No books worth keeping.

differently, but ...
The Pommel Stone can be used to create a very nice sword with, when
you find the other two pieces of the sword. Look at the hints that you
see every time you save the game or
auto-save-upon-moving-to-a-new-area, to find out who and how to deal
with.

Valuable gems are worth selling. Also, there are a few places where
you can use gems to improve existing items - in Throne of Bhaal, in
particular, you may or may not find uses for several star sapphires, a
couple each of emeralds, diamonds, king's tears and roguestones. You
may or may not find out where there is a use for a Rogue Stone,
Diamond and Beljuril stone in Shadows of Amn.

Generally, they aren't needed. Some old plot items are still useful if
you still want to go to the place which you needed them to pass
through. The Symbol of Amaunator is useless - it opened a door once,
that door stays open.

You could quite happily leave all the Amaunator-related stuff in a
chest near the entrance to the Umar Hills Temple Ruins, just in
case...

Get rid of all normal magic weapons that don't have extra powers or
resistances. Sell the lot.

As for the rest, just check to see whether the ability to have a
certain resistance, or cast spell X a number of Y times per day while
wielding the weapon, is more useful than it is for a different weapon.
If it is, keep it, if not, sell it.

Jonathan.

Sorry ... just finished NWN:HotU ... I *assumed* I had a bag of holding.
Boy ... I could sure use one. I think I'll take the 'stash stuff for later'
route.

Thanks again,

You haven't got a bag of holding unless you are cheating (or in
"cheating", hmmm. By my 8th or 9th party going through SoA I called
creating a BoH (and Boots of Speed) for everyone right at the
beginning "staying sane", or maybe "choosing how I will have fun
with the game". I would say it's a bit harsh calling it cheating
to give yourself a BoH - it won't affect the outcome of the game,
after all, it just means you don't waste time inventory shuffling.

Newspeak is irritating.

CTRL-Ying every foe you face won't affect the outcome of the game; it
just means you won't waste time fighting.

I dunno ... I'm pretty black and white on these things - downloading stuff
(music, games, movies, apps), even if you intend to buy them later, is
pirating. Likewise, any alteration of the programmed progress of a game is
cheating. Doesn't have to be a big deal or anything. I would love a bag of
holding now ... thought I had one but was mistaken. Reminds me of early on
in NWN as a Sorceror ... lots of heavy stuff to keep dragging around until
finding a weight redux bag ...

It's a cheat code that automatically kills the opponent you face.

Complete the tasks you were given by Aran Linvail or Bodhi, and you'll
get one.

Thanks. I had a couple of dragons I wish I could have 'CTRL-Y'd' ... but
then while I'd have avoided the frustration of multiple death-hands waving
at me, I'd also have missed the satisfaction of the 'target gone' message
... and the relief.

Cool, I'm on Aran's third task (he said last, I'm off to the graveyard).

You'd also have missed the XP, and had the slightly dirty feeling that goes
with not winning the game yourself...

Whatever you don't have an immediate use for but don't want to part with for
one reason or another, you can just put in a chest or crate somewhere and
then come back if you need it later. That way you don't have to lug it
around ;)

I never drop anything. Here's what I do: I put all used keys, notes, and
books in a favourite bookcase in Nalia's castle, where they're out of my
inventory, but there if I ever need them. I keep my gems on one character
since they stack, ie. you can have 100 sphene gems and they only take up one
space, and all the rings and amulets in 2 gem bags-- I've considered getting
a third at times-- and sell them as soon as I get to town, because the only
gem that actually does anything useful is a rogue stone that opens a very
nasty room of monsters in the bridge district. Anything like the Pommel
stone that you only get once I keep on me. Anything magical or +1 etc. I
keep to sell. But the thing that keeps the game going quickly for me is
that I never ever pick up normal items unless I'm hurting for gold. The
game's too long, and there's lots of gold to go around if you keep hammering
away at those side quests. Although, you might enjoy a bag of holding you
will find in the dungeon where you next run into Irenicus. At a guess I'd
say it holds 50 items of any kind with no weight added at all.

Happy hunting
